Classic styles get big compliments
July 21st 2008 10:52
I wore a satin polka-dot halter-neck Marilynesque dress on the weekend for a friend’s birthday and I ended up getting some big compliments from men and women.
(Sorry I don 't have a full-length pic of me in the dress...)
From “I love your dress” to “You look like a 1950’s movie star” to “You look fantastic!” I was gob-smacked at the compliments flying my way like fairy missiles destined to make a young woman smile.
I personally think the dress is nice but not so outstanding as to cause an outburst of compliments. I think it comes down to the fact that it’s a classic cut made famous by Marilyn – halter neck, bare back and a full knee-length skirt that drops from the waist. It stands out because it harks of another era and catches people’s imagination.
My evening reminded me too that we don’t always need to dress in the latest styles to feel pretty. We don’t in fact need a new dress to go to a party either. I’d worn this dress before but that didn’t diminish its appeal to first-time viewers.
I had thought that the dress was not that flattering for me. It squishes my chest down rather than up and it’s quite tight around my waist (I perhaps should have bought the size up but it was on sale and the last one left) making my hips stick out more than usual. However my own perceptions were not, obviously, in line with those that thought it was a great dress.
The takeaway from all this is that classic cuts are important to the female form and we should give them a go even if we think they’re not that wonderful on us – let others be the judge for once!
Some classic styles to try in your lifetime are:
- Marilyn halter-neck dress
- Black knee-length pencil skirt
- Peep toe heels
- Full flouncy 50’s style skirt
- ¾ sleeve jacket (worn with gloves at elbow length in cooler months)
- Long flowing evening gown
- Well-fitting crisp white cotton shirt
- A silk scarf tied at the neck
- Bright red lipstick (every woman at least once in her life should walk out of the house with fire engine red lips and feel how sensuous it is)
