Fringe benefits for 2008

Need a fresh new look for 2008? Get yourself a fringe.
The last time I had a fringe was in 1998 - I had one of those very short ones like Betty Boo.
Walking around for the last decade with my forehead showing got the better of me a couple of weeks ago. I was tired of looking at it. My hair was also giving me the feeling of dragging me down. I know I needed a haircut to revive it but...
I was not pleased with the last hair cut I got. The hairdresser thinned out my hair with too many layers and considering I don't have truckloads of hair to spare, I was not excited by his razor talents.
So, with creative spirit in toe and a pair of good hair scissors that I own, I took to cutting my own fringe, my side layers and even the ends of my hair. My justification: Why pay $100 for a haircut that you don't like when you can do it yourself ? Drum roll, please....here's the result:
Now I cut the fringe very cautiously. Leaving the length past my nose at first and then slowly cutting upward towards my brow. The last thing I wanted was a short fringe! I did not cut a perfectly straight line and this what I think gives my fringe a soft look. I went at it in a diagonal, so that it sits a bit longer on the left side of my face - it gives it a sweeping look versus a curtain sitting on my forehead.
This is how I cut the back: I brought half my hair over my right shoulder and the other half over the left shoulder. I then cut an inch off each side. When I swung the hair back to meet at the back I checked with a second mirror to see how crooked or straight the result was. It wasn't too bad - just needed a little tidying so I brought each half back over each shoulder, combed and stretched the hair really well to see which "stick-out" bits needed to be cut away. (Watch your hairdresser and they do the same thing).
I was quite pleased with the result. However, the true test is always what others think of your new haircut, and my 7 year old nephew had the opinion that counted. If you want honesty, ask a child.
He commented, "You look different."
I chimed in, "What's different about me?"
With a big smile and a twinkle in his eye, he offered, "You look younger."
There you have it. I am keeping this fringe for as long as I can!

I wish I could 'do' fringes. Every couple of years I convince myself I can pull one off only to end up looking like a complete loon.

I also cut my own hair because I hate spending money on stupid things. In fact, I just did mine earlier this week!
