Listening to your skin

It's time for a new face moisturiser. Just like your hair tires of using the same shampoo and conditioner for too long, the face also gets bored of the same moisturiser.
I've been using Olay Total Effects for about a year now, and I think my skin is tired of it. It looks a bit lifeless and it doesn't feel as smooth as it used to. However, I am going to finish the current bottle before I buy a new moisturiser for a number of reasons: the bottle is 3/4 full and if I don't finish it up now, it will be money down the drain once I buy the new moisturiser.
My checklist for the new moisturiser is simple:
* Basic moisture and hydration
I'm not going to bother about skin cell turnover, plumping, de-wrinkling, and all the other fancy things that face creams can do!
I got my fair share of skin cell turnover with Total Effects and I think my skin now just wants to feel nourished. I guess we have to listen to our skin to give it the best chance to look great.
Listening to your skin is simple:
1. Look at it from an unbiased perspective - that means don't be overly critical or overly dismissive of blemishes or lifelessness, but look at it as if you were looking at someone else's face. Many times we can look at someone else's skin and in our minds, we can think "Oh, she needs more moisture. Her skin is dry" or "Pat down that shine with some powder". Try to look at your face as if you don't own it so you can be honest with yourself about what to put on it and what not to put on it.
2. Run your fingers over you face in the dark - when you just feel rather than look, you can more easily identify the rougher areas that may need exfoliation. It's also a nice way to know how soft or dry your skin is.
3. By doing the above, you will get an instinct for what your skin needs...but to do the above you must be calm and accepting about yourself. If you are self-critical, you will rush toward the first product that you think will solve your problem. Sometimes it's not even about using a product, it may just be a matter of exercising more or smiling or getting some fresh air or...you'll know it when it rings inside you just like when other parts of our instinct guide us in life.
