Nature or nurture for silky hands

January 23rd 2008 02:43
A wonderful compliment I received some years ago for my hands was delicious at the time and delicious in my memory now. My sister and I were walking in the midst of a thronging crowd during New Year's Eve in Sydney trying to get a good vantage point for the the fireworks. To avoid losing each other as we pushed through the crowd, we held hands and as her hand took hold of mine, she said, "Your hands are so soft...oh they' feel so beautiful...so silky."

She then took my hand in both of hers to feel it a bit more. She enjoyed this newfound aspect of me just like when I see her wear something that brings out her beauty. I was touched.

When compliments are given for a part of me that I didn't realise could be complimented, I get a lovely sweet feeling. A soft feeling of grace that someone has seen something that I don't see. They enjoy something about me that I had no idea created an impact on them.

I have enjoyed other compliments for my hands since then, and I think it's a case of nature and nurture in the way they look and feel.

Apart from having long, slender fingers - Nature's gift - I didn't really see my hands as having any other advantage. Mind you, it took me a while to even see this advantage because once a friend of mine told me my hands were big like a man's (this was before I had received any compliments for my hands). That comment took me a while to get over! Perhaps the flurry of compliments after the insult was God's way of helping me see I don't have man's hands!

I didn't think they were soft or silky becuase I have touched other's hands and they felt much softer than mine.

However, based on people's opinions, they are soft and silky. This has nothing to do with nature. Nurture all the way. These are the top things you can do to get silky hands:

1) Moisturise day and night with a rich, creamy cream - Once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and before you go to bed. Personal favourites: Jurlique hand cream is amazing. It's expensive but it lasts forever. A good sorbolene cream also does the trick. Palmers Cocoa Butter Cream is lovely too.

2) Don't use soap as a handwash. Use a moisturising creamy handwash.

3) Always wear gloves when washing dishes, clothes or the car, cleaning the bathroom or during any other water-detergent laden activity.
