Tell the type of woman by her handbag

October 19th 2007 03:00
I was daydreaming on the train, and a woman, we all know them, with big hair, big earrings, fake nails, too many bangles, tight clothing and a mother-of-an-oversized, red imitation crocodile leather (looking very plastic) handbag (more like an overnight bag slung over her shoulder) got on the train.

Once she sat down, she plonked the big handbag on her lap and it protruded from the edge of her thighs, like a see-saw balancing itself. I am trying to paint a picture of a big bag. Are you getting it?

Okay, so seeing this BIG bag and woman together made me think of what type of a woman she is. Quickly my imagination leapt into making observations about women with big handbags, small handbags, stylish handbags, colourful handbags, and so on.

Small handbags show a kind of timidity that's sweet and a reservation about being too forward. They are gentle women most of the time but can bite back under pressure.

Stylish, designer handbags that cost weeks of pay for many people can show that the woman is "stylish" and appreciates beautiful things but if she has purchased the handbag purely for the reason of "appearing" stylish then she is not really stylish...I think you know what I mean. She's got to love that bag, be attracted to it and buy it for that reason and not because it was $2,000 and will make her appear "better" than others. Hhhmm...the world is full of these people. That's okay, I've got lots of flaws too.

Then there is the woman with a multi-coloured or bright handbag; yes these women I like best. They show creativity, flair and the ability to see through the surface of things.

The woman with a neutral tone handbag - the earthy colours, tans, beiges, creams - these are the women who feel for people and will be very connected to their children.

What about tacky handbags? Oh...it doesn't mean the woman is tacky just that she misplaced her reason...either in that instant of choosing the handbag or for a indeterminate period while she is sorting out her life.

Velvet satchels? I carried one when I was 19, not for evening wear but for everyday wear (aaagghhh)...clearly because I misconstrued that I was not living in the the romantic, Victorian era. Oh blessed confusion does give us uniqueness! And I was young!!!!!

The classic black bag - worn by many for work and play - well, this is the woman for whom I cannot make an observation because there are so many women with black handbags and it would be unfair to make a generalisation (what am I doing in the rest of this blog entry?)...

Now, if you own or have owned all of these types of handbags, then you are certainly a dynamic personality. Unfearing. Brave. Highly creative. You experiment. You are bold. You are constantly evolving and seek to better yourself.

I think women with handbags so big that they take up more than half their body size are insecure and looking to find things to fill them up (sort of like filling up a bag).

Warning: Interpret these opinions with care. These are only my views and could change as soon as I gain a wiser view of the world around me. However, they are my first or "original" thoughts which just like "first impressions" can be telling...you decide.

Ha! I love your descriptions.

What about those of us (okay, by 'us' I mean 'me') who have a handbag addiction and have at least one or more bags in each category (well, except for the velvet tote, I've never had one of those).

I'm glad you were complimentary about the designer bag women. Amongst my many many handbags, I have a gorgeous prada bag (bowling bag style in chocolate leather....classic and stylish to be sure) that I paid a fortune for, but still love as much today as I did when I bought it 5 years ago (quality lasts people). In fact, I often spend a Sunday night conditioning the leather of the bag to keep it in top shape.

Hmmm....thinking of that last sentence.....I just sound like I need a life!!!

Oh well, just don't get me started on shoes.....I'll be writing all day (mmmm......shoes).

What about people like me who just use whatever handbag available, usually passed down from mothers and sisters because I am too stingy to buy them new?

Kylie you crack-up! Hahaha.

OK I am a ONE BAG WOMAN. I can't handle the constant changing of the bag, I just end up with stuff all over the place, get somewhere and realise my credit cards are 'in my other bag', my lip gloss is 'in my other bag', "sorry officer, my licence in 'IN MY OTHER BAG' ". Drives me insane.

So except when I'm FORCED to, by location, situation, or colour co-ordination, in tend to stick with the same bag. To this end I try to choose bags that are very multi-purpose, and usually buy a new one every six months, depending on how much I can stretch the funds. (Like Kylie, I appreciate a truly beautiful bag.)

Great post - tell me, what sort of woman does this make me, if the bag maketh the bag-lady? Lol.

Hi ladies - thanks so much for your comments. I can't resist giving my opinion on what sort of ladies you are, given what you tell me about your bag ownership...

Now Kylie - bag addict across all types of bags = mutliple personality disorder. No. Just kidding. I think it means highly dynamic and highly, highly creative!!

Amy - What types of hand me downs do you choose though. Is there a theme to the types of hand me downs you prefer? Not wanting to buy a new bag may be a sign of being hesitant to embrace new happenings, opportunities...

Michaelie - I could spend more time on the bag couch with you to deepen my phsychoanalytics but in a bold move I declare you to be a loyal type, who stands unwavering in the face of constant changes and fluxes around you. Driven by your own opinions and not those of others!

Do tell me if i have crossed the line here! I could be way off track!!!

I will take that assessment quite happily, thank you, Lidia!

BTW maybe you should do a follow up post on what the contents of someone's bag says about them? Get to the heart of the id issue, Ms Freud! Lol.

wonderful observations!
people (men) say i have a big handbag, and i do keep my whole life in there, i just have the one bag with everything in it and i never go anywhere without it . . . i personally think its medium sized shoulder bag, its bottom of the range designer (Guess) and its basically black but with alot of shiny buckles and studs and other bibs and bobs . . . i bought it so it would dress up any outfit and also so i could pretend to be mary poppins and pull a lamp, a potted plant, and a bicycle out of it haha
