The rules of good undies
June 8th 2008 06:48
The shrewd woman knows that the right underpants can either make or break an outfit. If undies are too tight or not the right shape for your body, you get bulges from your belly, hips, thighs and bottom which makes your skirts and outer pants look as if they are battling with an undulating landscape.
If undies are too loose, they ride up or sag or crumple up to make waves under your outfits. The wrong undies do not streamline your figure. The right undies do.
I am writing this post due to an undie situation I had recently which made me think that a few tips on undie selection can come in handy for the discerning woman.
I see the rules of the right undies as follows: (please let me know of others so we can grow the list)
1) Get the right shape and style for your body.
Curvy bodies with hips = high cut bikini underwear, full briefs, softer and stretchier fabrics that will not cut into the flesh as much as highly elasticated undies. A bikini or fuller brief cut sits on and over your hips helping to streamline them. If you like G-strings, make sure they are generous width across your hips and that the fabric is soft enough to stretch well over your hips.
Tight tummy tuckers are good for this shape as long as the top part of the undies sits over your belly not in the middle of it.
The boy leg cut and low rise little undies are harder to wear when you have hips. They will sit under your hips rather than on them and make your hips stick out under your outfits.
Also good for this shape are lace french knickers because, again, lace is a soft fabric which will stretch with your body. However, the expensive french knickers have a more generous cut than the cheapies so make sure they look wide enough to fit across your hips rather than dig into them.
Slim, straight bodies = boyleg, low rise, boxer style undies, G-strings work great because these bodies don't need to worry about elastic cutting into them. They also look great on their shape. I think this body shape can also easily wear a high cut bikini or full briefs but really they don't need to. Tighter stretch cottons and fabrics are fine on this body shape too since if you're not fleshy, the tighter fit will actually feel nice across your body. If the fabric is too loose, it will sag on your bottom.
2) Try them on before you buy
Take in different sizes and shapes and then pop your outerwear back on to see the effect of the undies.
3) Do they make you feel good?
The answer should be yes. If you're after comfort, make sure they answer that need. If you're after a sexy look, make sure they do that for you. If you want to feel womanly, make sure they meet that expectation.
4) Have enough undies in your drawer to meet different outfit needs.
There's nothing wrong with having with 20 pairs of undies in your drawer, or more! I know we need 7 pairs for 7 days of the week but all the extra pairs are necessary for the many different outfits in our wardrobes.
We need undies that meet many different situations too - working out, romancing and attracting, that time of the month, feeling fat days, feeling beautiful days, total comfort vegging on the sofa in my oldest most comfiest undies, special occasions, and so on.
5) Wear undies that sit below the top of your skirts or pants whether you are standing or sitting!
I don't think G-strings hanging out of jeans is a great look. I think some women purposely show off their undies and that's fine, but really there are so many other ways to express yourself in a fashion sense...like wearing beautiful earrings or painting your nails...
6) Always, always, always keep at least one pair of old undies because they are the most comfortable!
Just don't show them to anyone and wear them at home only - in case you get caught out.
