Who do you dress for?

October 30th 2007 02:18
I have found that when I am in the throes of attraction, my attention to detail on my outfits, accessories and all other adornments goes off the Richter scale. In other words, I dress the best that I can to impress the one that I am attracted to.

The romantic interest or crush fuels my desire to look good. This is a natural instinct. It happens in the wild so why wouldn't it happen with humans! A striking example from nature is when peacocks show off their plumage during courtship. There's no doubt the peacock is stating: "Look, look at me. I have the biggest, brightest feathers around here!"

If you are currently feeling those love hormones pulsate through you, then you don't need much advice about looking good. Your own instinct (and hormones) are driving you to embellish yourself.

Now for those of us currently not attracted to someone - including people in existing relationships where there has been a lack of fire or lust or that special chemistry - then we need some special advice to help us revive our looks.

I beseech you to choose someone to dress for! Yes that's right.

Your gal pals may be the place to start...if you're not already dressing for them. Tight-knit girlfriends who hang out a lot do end up wanting to wear nice things for each other so they can soak up the compliments as well as hand them back out.

I get excited when I have a new dress for all the obvious reasons - makes me feel new, look new - but also because I want to show my best friends! I also love seeing what they're wearing...it makes me appreciate them so much more.

So, in recent times, I have been dressing for them. I also get inspiration from this site: The Sartorialist. It's a fabulous place to see what people around the world are wearing in real-life, not on the catwalks.

And remember, when you are as single as can be - you're not dating, seeing, or even interested in someone - every time you walk out the door, you could bump into Mr. I Like You! Have this thought in the FRONT of your mind during your morning routine to help fake the hormone burst of pure attraction...

I think the Peacock says it all. What does HE do for you?

I dress for myself. I try to look good, and then I feel good.

Mind you, there are days when I feel bloody awful... Lol.

I must be a duck. My husband and I are soul mates just as ducks only partner once in their lives (motorists please take note). The days of showy plummage are long gone and we just dont have the energy for frantic teen - early 20's sex anymore but there is a certain comfort and pleasure to be taken from having the admiration for my now dowdy plummage, still given so freely by my partner. Roll on old age, the eyes grow dim but the heart loves freely.

Hi Lidia,

Interesting title and question... I have to say ~ first and foremost... comfort, then for me... if some blokey bloke likes it, all the better *chuckle* but I won't alter the halter for eny ego, especially at the risk of comfort..."no way girlfriend!"

*laughs*

A fun post.

Well, most of my friends live overseas, so there is little point snazzing up, lol!
I used to like to look my best, but these days i would rather feel my comfiest! I might put something fancy on if I am having my photo taken, but when it is myself, my pigeons, and my teenage son - well, there just does not really seem to be any point wasting my money or time!

Like Michaelie, I dress for me. I try to put some effort into looking good but there are times when I just couldn't be bothered. But I do remember taking all the time & effort before my husband came along. But now that hubby proudly sports his Star Wars shirt and his old 3/4 pants everywhere, well, you just don't get motivated to dress up as much.

I guess I didn't express that part of myself well....yep, dressing for myself is a given because wearing stuff just because someone else likes it and you don't is not going to make you look good. The "myself" bit is the foundation to your whole look and should be the most important aspect. I was more on about that glow you get when you are placing fine attention to detail on your outfit...the embellishment phase of dressing...which can be inspired by thoughts of others...that dreamy dentist you are hanging out to see...and so you don a set of pearl earrings because they make you feel all soft on the inside...or you spray extra perfume so the coffee shop owner can smell you above the smell of coffees...etc etc etc
