Women sniffing bargains

November 29th 2007 05:11
What is about women and bargains? We can't resist them no matter how many pairs of shoes, handbags and dresses we have in our wardrobes.

Discovering beautiful things at bargain basement prices makes me feel heady...like I've discovered (for an instant) a place never before travelled to. I know when something reflects me all over and no rational reason is going to stand in my way, especially when the price is not going to break the budget.

Check out these $30 velour shoes with ribbons that tie around the ankles - I found them only the other day. YUM! They're probably a rip-off of a fab designer shoe but I don't know which one.

More than the way they look, they fit me perfectly and are comfortable...I don't buy shoes if they're not comfortable. Forget that because bad-fitting shoes means self-inflicted pain, bunions, callouses, crooked toes...I hope not to get such feet until well into my 80s!

I have learned to buy things that I really like and get a fair bit of wear out of. Here are 3 basic rules for buying only those bargains we know we are going to wear and like for more than one month!

1. The object has to have the "ME" factor. It has to speak of your essence and reflect your inner qualities. Your gut tells you if the object is right for you. Listen to it. Can you leave the store without buying it and feel okay?

I once saw a skirt in Paris in the fashionable Marais District that was quite expensive and so I tried to resist buying it. It had ME woven into the fabric itself (and the style was even called Australie) but I left the store trying not to think about it further...but I couldn't. I went back to the store after a jaunt in the nearby streets because the skirt kept saying "You can't leave this country without me". Hopefully you won't think I'm fashionably insane! The skirt is floor length tulle with amazing mocha coloured etching spiced at its hem and mid-lengths. It's a timeless, formal piece.

2. Comfort - you have to feel comfortable in it - psychologically and physically.

I think you know what this rule means - a size too small ain't the way to go even if the price is reduced by 95%. A size too big is also not the go. If it pulls, tugs, flops, or flaps in places it shouldn't then away with it. The fashion angel will bring you the right-fitting bargain.

3. Is it really a bargain? Does the price match the quality?

Retailers are experts at making us feel like we got a bargain but sometimes we end up getting a poorly made product that no one else bought yet we got sucked into. Look at the way the object is made. Is it going to fall apart or last long enough to justify the spend?

Also has it really been reduced or is that more the natural price because the original price was to high? At the beginning of a season, some retailers think we're going to pay $250 for a cotton shift dress! Then they slash it to a few weeks later to a price which is more in line with buyers' expectations.

May the Bargain Force be with you this Christmas season.
